SOUNDPAINTING
Soundpainting is the universal multidisciplinary live composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual Artists. Presently (2020) the language comprises more than 1500 gestures that are signed by the Soundpainter (composer) to indicate the type of material desired of the performers. The creation of the composition is realized, by the Soundpainter, through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. The Soundpainting language was created by Walter Thompson in Woodstock, New York in 1974.
I've always been fascinated with improvisation and I was very happy to discover Soundpainting in 2014. Since then I followed regularly masterclasses with soundpainters as Walter Thompson and Eric Chapelle.
In 2020 I received my certificate of the second level.
Soundpainting is a great tool to make music without any previous knowledge of improvisation. It's for all levels and ages. With Soundpainting you can make music without scores. A performance is dialogue between the Soundpainter and the Performers and every Soundpainting composition is unique.
Because artists from different disciplines work together on one artistic whole, many students often come for the first time into creative contact with other disciplines (music, word, dance and visual arts) and are thus invited to gain inspiration across the boundaries of their own discipline.
I teach soundpainting in the music school of KADE Podiumkunsten and also give workshops in schools for teacher and students.
Together with Belgian soundpainters Johan Sabbe and Karolien Voets I often give performances in Belgium.
